Many of us aspire to be different from others: We explore the world seeking things to take as our own and begin forming an identity around the concepts we understand. The ideas motivating us are vast and awesome and are responsible for much of the expanding, intersectional world we experience. In attempt to be conventionally different, however, we become more similar in perception. We find ways to more comfortably look through the glass and hold the mirror as we analyze ourselves and our environment.

Experiencing a perspective that doesn’t appear the same as your own can expand on the understandings you have of yourself and familiarize your mind with perceptions you might also adopt.

I grew up learning to ride a ripstik and decided it would be useful to learn to ride a more portable mode of transportation in preparation for college. When I first got a penny board, I made the mistake of putting the wrong address down for the order. Fortunately, the kind people who obtained it found a way to reach out to me so we could meet up. I remember being so excited to have my first penny and envisioning plans for how I’d design it.

At the time, the options for customization were limited. The board came as a black deck with yellow/green trucks and red wheels (rasta). I had recently heard back from USC and chose to stylize the board accordingly. Gold is still my favorite.

In the weeks that passed, I wore down the wheels and scratched up the 3 coats of spray paint in addition to degritting the lux red topside.

The more time I spent riding, the more comfortable and creative I became with the concept.

I learned more and friends noticed.

i was inspired to start a skate club my freshman year, we called it "SIC"

I love seeing other people conquer an unfamiliar challenge. Maybe its the mirror neurons firing away or my perception of unshaped reactions being expressed. perhaps it's a combination of both. Observation is a must, but Assisting in providing space for those new perspectives makes my daiya.

the world feels a little different in motion.
